Connection with Gregory Michie

Sandra Cisneros's book, The House On Mango Street, was used in Gregory Michie's book, Holler if You Hear Me.  Michie used Cisneros's book to assist the Hispanic children in his school to better relate to their readings and have a clearer comprehension of what they were learning. Michie wanted to get some students together to record some of the readings from her book so that his students could listen to them and follow along while reading. The group of students Michie formed together to record some of the readings enjoyed learning and relating to their culture through this book so much, they did not want to stop meeting after the project was completed. They loved the book, and they enjoyed their time together.  His initial idea of what he wanted to do with the book turned into something much more than that. He created a group of students found a place in their school where they could relate and feel they belong.

The students in this group he called the "Mango Girls", tried to contact Cisneros. They sent her a letter hoping she would at least respond. The Mango Girls waited the whole rest of the school year to hear back from her, but they didn't. The following school year, after these girls had graduated from the school, Cisneros responded.  Michie received a phone call and was told that Cisneros would love to come to the school and meet with the girls.  Michie quickly tired to contact the girls and give them the great news. Once he contacted them, he also contacted their new schools to have them out of school for the day.

"It is a great and marvelous thing to be reminded that to change the world we need only to change ourselves. Greg Michie and his students give me that hope."
