Stockyards Gate

Back of the Yards is a south side neighborhood named after the old stockyards. Today the gate to the stockyard still stands, and is all that is left of the union stockyards. This neighborhood used to be filled with Eastern European immigrant stockyard workers, and is now home to many Hispanic people.

Connection to Holler if You Hear Me

Back of the yards is mentioned in Holler if You Hear Me as Michie teaches at a predominantly Hispanic school. He brings us into the life of Hispanic immigrants and how they struggle with school. Many of the Hispanic students lived in Back of The Yards. Michie brought us there as he went to check on students and connect with their lives.

Seward Student Network Elementary School

Picture
Seward Student Network elementary school is one of the schools where Dr. Gregory Michie taught some of his students. This school sits south of Chicago near Back of The Yards.  Michie would often go to The Back of The Yards to visit his students.

While teaching at this school, Dr. Gregory Michie had an after school program where he would teach the students how to make videos. When we met with Michie he gave us the YouTube link to their videos.
All of the videos were written and produced by 7th and 8th grade students attending Seward Student Network Elementary.

This is where The Back Of The Yards is located.
